Tried and Tested: Monster Sushi at Langham Place
Hey guys! Haven't done a food post in a while, although I've been trying a lot of good food! This time I headed to the raved about sushi joint owned by the eye candy Daniel Wu, and tried out just how monstrous(ly yummy) Monster Sushi is!
There is almost always a line in the Langham joint, so it was no different when we headed up there on a weeknight during the usual dinner time. Although we only had to wait about ten minutes before we were comfortably seated across each other on the long stretched table. (We'd have to wait longer if we wanted seats in front of the show and near the sushi belt)
There are beautiful floor to ceiling windows inside, which brings amazing ambiance to the place. There were also seats right next to the window so if you're lucky you could have some sashimi next to some natural sky light! Because we were rushing to the movies, we quickly ordered a few of our favourites and see how Monster Sushi fared against the chain sushi joints in the city/area.
Shrimp Tempura Roll ($28)
I always enjoy sushi rolls and I enjoyed this especially much! The shrimp tempura was fried to perfection, not soggy and wrapped in a thin layer of avocado (a sign of a resto not cheaping out with cucumbers!) The rolls were dusted with seaweed salt, which brought all the flavours together perfectly.
Scallop w/ Japanese Sauce ($55)
This was so good! Arriving on a sizzling hot plate, the scallops were done just right. Usually I fear cooked scallop just because they can get so chewy and impossible to swallow, but this definitely changed my mind! The Japanese sauce is towards the sweet side and adds a lot of flavour to the dish.
House Special Sashimi Flower ($36)
This was by far my favourite thing from the meal that night! From the special menu, this was a seasonal item. (although still available on the site menu now!) Super yummy hand-grilled with the fire-gun thing so the Sea Urchin paste is toasty and melted while the sashimi was fresh and not chewy at all.
Salmon Sushi ($15)
The staple and icon of sushi, the Salmon sushi did not disappoint! Longer than the actual rice ball means that the proportion between fish and rice was perfect. (Don't you hate the skimpy salon sushi that has a 10:1 rice to fish ratio? Or super un-fresh salmon! #ugh)
Mango California Roll ($26)
The slight sourness of the mango goes great with the fullness of avocado inside. This is the upgrade from your usual cucumber stuffed and avocado-less (fake) cali rolls!
Cuttlefish & Sea Urchin ($32) / Crab Roe ($15) / Hairy Crab & Crab Roe ($18) Gunkan Maki
I absolutely love the cuttlefish and sea urchin combo, my favourite is probably from the MTR $3 sushi stores! But this was the premium version which had a fresher and fuller sea urchin taste. The crab roe is a classic, and this ticked all the boxes with the crunchy seaweed and fresh (also crunchy) roes. The Hairy Crab + roe is a mother/son combo (kind of cruel really lol!) but nevertheless super yums. Didn't think too much of it, but it wasn't in any way bad!If you wanna head down and try it for yourself, they have outlets in Mongkok and Tsim Sha Tsui (all heil the dark side!)
Till next time,xx
